One of my all time favourites has been this line :
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. —Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (1813)

When I started reading that book , the first line itself sealed the fact that I will finish it :-)

they should do one of short stories. kaizad gustaad started one with "it was difficult respecting louisa in the morning" that one sentence built said so much...
